næs is a family runned restaurant in vestmannaeyjar, on the volcanic westman islands off the south coast of iceland.

back in 2012, chef Gísli Matt and his family opened SLIPPURINN in a restored shipyard workshop on heimaey. over 14 seasons it became one of iceland's most celebrated restaurants — built on close relationships with local fishermen and farmers, wild foraging from the island's lava fields and coastline, and a kitchen that combined old icelandic techniques with modern methods.

the family was at the heart of it. father Auðunn supplied fresh fish and prepared traditional dried bacalao. mother Katrín grew herbs and flowers and welcomed every guest. sister Indíana shaped the space and the experience. the SLIPPURINN cookbook, published by phaidon, captured the recipes and stories from those years.

SLIPPURINN closed in 2025. not from fatigue, but from a feeling that the moment was right.

næs

næs opened across the street in 2022 — a casual place built around great produce served simply. the name means "nice" and that's still the idea.

this summer, næs carries forward 14 years of knowledge and island relationships, but in its own way. Gísli is in the kitchen alongside his chefs Stefan and Adrian. we work with the island's fishermen, the wild foraged herbs — and make everything from scratch. the menu changes with the seasons and with what the boats bring in.

næs is not slippurinn reborn. it's what comes next.
